CARAH History and the 9th CARAH

The 1st International Conference on Artificial Reefs and Artificial Habitats – CARAH) was held in Houston, Texas, USA in 1974. Since then, it has occurred at approximately four-year intervals. Past locations for the meeting have included Brisbane, Australia (1977); California, USA (1983); Miami, USA (1987); California, USA (1991); Tokyo, Japan (1995); San Remo, Italy (1999) and Biloxi, Mississipi, USA (2005).

Much has happened during the past two decades. Quoting Bortone (2006), the last conference (8th CARAH) provided the scientific community an opportunity to present, demonstrate, and display the current state of our understanding and knowledge of artificial reefs and artificial habitats.

Similarly, previous CARAHs have also afforded this same opportunity and, moreover, have provided a platform from which scientists from other environmental sub-disciplines have offered their perspectives on this relatively new field of aquatic ecology and expanded the status and trends in artificial reef research since those previous works.

This is the first time that the CARAH will be in a country of the South Hemisphere. We know our responsibility and we also hope to stimulate discussions regarding the current state of artificial reef research and to offer a challenge to develop new directions for research as well as to give a perspective for success in satisfying the “recommendations for future priorities” suggested more than 20 yrs earlier by Bohnsack and Sutherland (1985).

The 9th International Conference on Artificial Reefs and Related Aquatic Habitats - 9th CARAH" will be in Curitiba, Paraná State, (southern) Brazil. The Conference will be held at the main campus of the Positivo University from

November 8th to 13th, 2009.
